Morkie is a cross between a Maltese and a Yorkshire Terrier. The name Morkie is a portmanteau combining the two breed names. As ahybrid dog breed, the Morkie may exhibit characteristics of both of its parent breeds.
Appearance and pigments
Morkies generally fall into two main categories in terms of their appearance: black and tan, or butterscotch. Black and tan Morkies look very similar to a Yorkshire Terrier, although the may be more muted. A butterscotch Morkies, sometimes referred to as blonde, will generally have very little in the way of black markings on it.
Temperament
As a hybrid, the Morkie may exhibit a temperament like either parent, or a combined type. Yorkshire Terriers are from the Toy Group but areterriers nonetheless. They are determined, investigative and energetic.[1] Maltese are usually more gentle mannered They are known for being lively, playful and fearless despite their small size.[2]
As is the case with all dog hybrids, Morkies inherit any number of combinations of both the physical and behavioral attributes of Maltese and Yorkshire Terrier. This cross can suffer from many of the same health issues as a Yorkie or Maltese. These health concerns may includetracheal collapse, cataracts, medial patellar luxation, hydrocephalus, chronic valvular heart disease, kidney failure, and glaucoma. When provided with good care and regular checkups, small dogs like the Morkie typically live between 12 and 16 years.[citation needed]
